This program gives qualified individuals the opportunity to come to Canada and establish themselves as self-employed in the province of Quebec.

What is a self-employed person

According to the regulation, a self-employed person is someone who comes to Quebec to create his or her own employment through the practice of a profession or commercial activities, whether alone or with other candidates for immigration without assistance or with paid assistance.

In addition to the minimum requirements that must be met, all applicants to this program are also required to meet the following requirements:

  • To have the free choice of the means of execution of the work;
  • Organize the work;
  • Provide the required tools and equipment;
  • Performing most specialized functions; and
  • To collect the profits and assume the risks of loss from the work.

The requirements of the Quebec self-employed workers program

  • Intend to reside in Quebec and create your own employment through the exercise of a profession, trade or business activity;
  • Have a minimum net worth of $100,000, legally obtained;
  • Have acquired at least two years of work experience as a self-employed person in the profession or trade you intend to practice in Quebec.
  • If you plan to engage in a business activity, the self-employment experience must be in a business activity.

Other criteria taken into consideration

  • The age of the applicant and his/her spouse or common-law partner (if applicable);
  • The field and duration of the professional training he/she has followed;
  • The candidate’s language skills in French and English;
  • The personal qualities of the candidate;
  • Education level;
  • Stays in Quebec (The applicant cannot cumulate the duration of stays of different types and it is also forbidden to cumulate the duration of stays made by the principal applicant with the duration of stays made by his spouse);
  • Family in Quebec;
  • Characteristics of the accompanying spouse or common-law partner;
  • Ability to be financially self-sufficient;
  • Adaptability

 

The occupation in which you have gained experience must be defined in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) in order to be self-employed.

Candidates from France can benefit from the agreement between Quebec and France on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. In addition, it requires certificates of qualification for certain jobs in the following areas:

  • Boutefeu (mining exploration and seismic category)
  • Electricity
  • Inspection of pressure vessels
  • Gas installation and handling (natural gas and propane)
  • Pressurized installations – Handling of halocarbon gases
  • Elevator Mechanics
  • Mechanics of fixed machines
  • Welding of pressure vessels
  • Drinking water treatment and distribution
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Piping
  • Technical process piping
